Just to say that, after a little year, I gave an other try to Mate 1.28
and it went up with fewer pain than the last one and all appears now
properly set.

> 1) Mate is much lighter, eg tcl/tk software go up like a twist;
Confirming this point.

2) Screens:

About managing the screens I reduced my xorg.conf to few lines as
possible, by taking up only the first monitor and giving a wave ride to

Option "AutoAddDevices" "on"
Option "AutoAddGPU" "on"

that did the trick, taking all the screens up and leaving the rest
to System -> Preferences -> Hardware -> Screens to me (where you can
select to disable one screen or the other, set the usual position of
screens, set the prefered resolution and mirror the screens or not).

I attach my reduced xorg.conf for your convinience (remember to replace
BUS ID with your real one)

> 3) the software that accompaign Mate is few or doesnt run, eg the
> power management utility doesnt function
It sounds that you need to start the messagebus like per installation
instructions, but it is not essential.

> 4) the context menu by right clicking anywhere on the desktop has no
> application menu
This really have no solution for now.

About Caja it seems all OK, now.

Difficult and variagated subject, but in
the moment that Gmail and other SV are banning
sms for 2FA, I just want to underline that chip
authentications by smartcard readers have still
a rare device/middleware software support even
in OpenBSD.

Is maybe matter the opensource community is
expected to move first on this matter then wait
authorities? Ops.

I frankly don't expect a patch, here..but as owner
of a smartcard reader for my id that doesn't run in
this OS for different circustances, please accept
my signaling, at this moment in time.

Dan

Goodie from Nano.

When you want to delete the current word you are over
with the cursor add the following line to ~/.nanorc:

bind ^J "{nextword}{mark}{prevword}{zap}" main

Credits to Nano project (thanks to Benno Shulenberg for
the trick and sorry for bleming: it works just great)

I convinced myself to run OpenBSD on my Mac from 2011.

A three problems matter.

a) How to access the boot menu: press Option / Alt key while starting your Mac.

b) Be sure to not compromise the existing OS: you usb installation shouldn't mount
external hds by device node references; or try http://fuguita.org project;

c) How to fix a missing EFI boot (the Mac requires it)

You can go ahead adding your EFI boot in this way:
1) backup your usb stick;
2) note down, somewhere your OpenBSD sector boundaries and offset+size of the last existing partition.
3) check you have some unused space on your stick, actually almost 300mb;
4) fdisk -i -b blocks[@offset[:EF]] sdx (<- replacing sdx with your usb disk)
stating carefully the @offset of the new partition
like the offset+size of the last existant partition;
NB: if you calculate well offset and size of the new partition,
without overwriting the existing data you should not lose anything.
5) confirm to fdisk the writing of the mbr; this will create
one only EFI area, partition [i], but..
6) at this point it seems you lose everything because fdisk
if you go in disklabel everything disappeared;
the matter is simple: you just created an empty zone
out the used space, so the subject become to recreate the OpenBSD
area in fdisk, with related boundaries (covering the full disk)
and going in disklabel you will notice everything is back;
7) remaining in disklabel add the partition [i] yourself like MSDOS
with the required offset and size; save labels;
8) now launch: newfs_msdos sdxi (<- replacing x with your usb disk)
9) manually copy BOOTX64.EFI and BOOTIA32.EFI from /usr/mdec to your
new partition in efi/BOOT (BOOT should be uppercase).

About *shelling*, I found two useful tricks to edit the filesystem.

To speed up editing on folder file list:
nano *.xml (CTRL+S, CTRL+X)

Recursively into subdirs:
nano `find . -name *.xml` (CTRL+S, CTRL+X)

The problem comes when given a filesystem structure like:

xml1/email/posta@celere.com
xml2/email/posta@celere.com
xml3/email/posta@celere.com
xml4/email/posta@celere.com
xml5/email/posta@celere.com
xml6/email/posta@celere.com
xml7/email/posta@celere.com

I want to rename with one unique shell commmand all the wrong
emails to posta@elettronica.lol

So born "ren", the interactive shell script to rename portion of file system - attached downward and supplied AS-IS.

In my OpenBSD 7.5, xfce-4.18.1, after the upgrade the Characters Map / Special Characters utility was missing both graphically, in the menu, and on disk.

Reinstalled manually Char Map after the upgrade with:

pkg_add gucharmap
